Tips on rom Alterations! Very few of us are the perfect model size. So this means alterations and custom tailoring for most formal dresses and prom gowns. Here are a few tips on prom alterations and custom tailoring: 1) Find the right tailor. Look in your local yellow pages for a good tailor. Make sure to request references and see their work before you let them alter your gown. If the seamstress seems uneasy in tailoring your gown, go to someone else. A good seamstress will be able to change any prom gown. That's right, someone who knows the trade can even make a prom gown that is 4inches to small fit by adding side allowance pieces. 2) Make sure to get a dollar amount quoted to you in writing before you let a seamstress work on your prom dress. If a seamstress quotes you a price, she must stick with this price. Most seamstresses will charge higher prices if you don't ask what the price is before hand. 3) Wear the same shoes and undergarments to your fitting that you will wearing at prom. This way the seamstress does not have to guess at how far the hem must go up or how much to take in the cups. 4) Take pictures of your prom dress before you leave it at the seamstresses. Prom girls have told us that a seamstress burned their dress with an iron and then tried to accuse the prom girl of having brought it to the seamstress that way. 5) Pick up your dress on time. Prom girls have told us their nightmares of going to pick up their dress Saturday morning of prom night and finding the store closed on Saturdays.
